The Kanga Towel
The kanga is one of East Africa’s most beloved textiles. For more than a century, this cotton cloth has been worn along the Swahili coast as a wrap, shawl, baby sling, and head covering, and given as a gift to mark life’s milestones.

Each kanga has three traditional elements: a central design called the mji, a border called the pindo, and a Swahili proverb printed along the bottom. The proverbs speak of patience, wisdom, love, resilience, and quiet defiance. Sometimes opposing proverbs are worn as gentle disagreements.

This limited-edition towel is made from a vintage kanga sourced in Tanzania and preserves the textile’s original design, message, and character. Kenyan artisans back it with soft terrycloth, creating a generously sized towel for wrapping up, laying out, or bringing to the beach, the sauna, or around the home. Comes in a variety of colors.

100% of profits from this towel support Indigenous communities, wildlife conservation, and ecological restoration.
