Coulson Macleod is a very cool UK-based art business specialising in the design and production of handmade, typography-based, artwork printed onto natural and reclaimed materials including...
Coulson Macleod like to mix the old with the new. So, while they might use a modern quote they'll place it on reclaimed Victorian roof timbers. Or they'll use hand-stamped lettering alongside high-end digital printing. Or they'll distress computer-generated text by repeatedly running it through an old photocopier. Or they'll leave shiny new steel sheets outside in the rain until they've developed just the right patina of rust.
It's this desire to mix up traditional and modern techniques, materials, and styles that makes their work so interesting.
Each piece of Coulson Macleod artwork is individually handmade in the UK by traditional craftsmen. Any imperfections in the material used are retained to add character to the finished pieces. These can include knots, water marks, and nail holes in reclaimed timber, chips in stone, and rust on steel. This way no two pieces are ever exactly alike, and every artwork produced is unique. By design.
